Atlas Achievers: Celebrating Trimester 1 Achievements!

Atlas Achievers: Celebrating Trimester 1 Achievements!

A dedicated spotlight celebrating the exceptional accomplishments of our students, providing a platform to showcase the remarkable work and achievements within the Atlas School community.

Trimester 1 is a time of discovery, growth, and triumph for our new students. We shine the spotlight on two students in our Computer Science and Machine Learning program: Jeremy Mitts and Davey Hays, two remarkable individuals who have embraced the challenges and opportunities of their Atlas journey with enthusiasm and determination.

What Atlas experiences made you feel like, "Hey, this is where I belong!"?

Jeremy:  I don't even know where to begin. The staff? The environment? The curriculum? The community? The staff, from security all the way to Libby, are so warm and welcoming and supportive. It just feels like I have an entire army of people that only want to see me succeed.

Davey: The Atlas curriculum starts you at the very bottom, working in shell and C - that kind of "start at the bottom and build up" mentality really resonates with me.

We all had expectations coming in – what’s something unexpected that you've discovered about Atlas?

Jeremy: I thought "This is going to be a lot of work, but it will probably be fun, and I'll probably make new friends along the way." It is a LOT of work, but it is so rewarding when you realize all the new knowledge you have. It's more fun than I imagined, and it's hardly been more than 30 days and I have an entire group of new friends.

Davey: I expected a more traditional teaching experience with one person going over a concept. Instead, our instructors introduce a concept and, in small groups, we work together to figure out the broader concepts ourselves, with instructors and tutors available when we have questions.

We're all about support here! Share a moment where someone (student or staff) at Atlas had your back during your transition—anything that made you go, "Wow, this is a great community!"

Jeremy: When I forgot my badge and Mike was not judgmental at all. When I lost my badge and Wes was not judgemental at all... ha!

Davey: I've had nothing but support from the staff- when I felt overwhelmed or scared or defeated the student success coordinators have been extremely approachable, they check in periodically, they are very heavily invested in our success and I love that.

Looking forward to the next trimesters, what Atlas adventures are you most excited about? Any sneak peeks into what's on your radar?

Jeremy: I can't wait to get to machine learning. I can't wait to see who sticks it out!!

Davey: I can't wait for simple shell! The idea of making an entire shell (basic though it may be) really feels like the kind of project that would mentally separate me from an amateur to a professional. It's like peeking behind the Wizard of Oz's curtain and seeing how the simple building blocks build on each other to make something complex and useful.
